Sulphadiazine in the Treatment of Cholera

چکیده
was shorter than that of the controls (7.1 days) and the total amount of saline required was less in the sulphadiazine-treated cases than in the controls. Chu, Huang, Chang arid Kao (1946) report the treatment of 25 cases of cholera with sulphadiazine and compare the result with that of 29 cases not treated with sulphadiazine and claim efficiency for sulphadiazine on clinical data. The results of treating a larger series of cholera patients with sulphadiazine* as compared with the results of a parallel series not treated with sulphadiazine are presented in table I. All the patients were suffering clinically from cholera and were treated as in-patients in a cholera hospital. The selection of cases for treatment was made on alternate admission basis. In many, the diagnosis was confirmed by the isolation of agglutinable vibrios, but it was not possible to make full bacteriological examination in every case. All the patients received the usual saline supportive treatment: The sulphadiazine series received powdered sulphadiazine 1 gramme, 4-hourly during the acute stage of the disease and three times a day for two days afterwards unless the patient left the hospital earlier.

Sulphadiazine and Sulphaguanidine in Cholera
The usefulness of sulphaguanidine in the treatment of cholera, especially in its early stage, was discussed in a previous paper published by the author (1945). The absorbable sulphonamides however do not appear to have been as yet much tried for the treatment of this disease. Hardy et al. (1943) and Hardy and Cummins (1943) published two papers indicating very good curative action of sulphadiaz...

Background: Cholera toxin (CT), responsible for the harmful effects of cholera infection, is made up of one A subunit (enzymatic), and five B subunits (cell binding). The release of cholera toxin is the main reason for the debilitating loss of intestinal fluid. Inhibition of the B subunit (CTB) may block CT activity. Objective: To determine the effect of anti CTB-IgY against oral challenge with...
